How Hollywood Paws Grad and His Pet Worked Together on TV Pilot Family Man

Los Angeles, Calif. (PRWEB) December 14, 2007 -- The Los Angeles-based animal academy Hollywood Paws teaches owners to train their pets for film, TV and commercial acting. The institute's clients come from all walks of life, but rarely from inside the entertainment industry - which makes Steven Schachter's story so remarkable.

The Emmy-winning director enrolled at Hollywood Paws to train his boxer, Dyson, for the spotlight. A few months later, the two had graduated from the Paws program and Steve was offered the chance to direct Family Man, a comedy pilot for TNT starring and co-written by William H. Macy (with whom Schachter previously collaborated on the Emmy-winning TV movies Wool Cap and Door-to-Door).

Schachter cast Dyson as the family dog on the show - a rambunctious comedy about an upstanding citizen who moonlights as a cat burglar - but when he realized this substantial role would require two full-time on-set trainers he enlisted his Paws instructors, Joel Norton and Anne Gordon.

Dyson worked 12 days on the show, prepping at Sunset Gower Studios and shooting at various locations in Burbank. His scenes included a football game, a segment in which he ran with a soccer team, and another in which he accompanied the titular family on a bike ride. Numerous challenging behaviors were required of the novice canine actor, including taking direction from behind. But because Steve continued Dyson's training regimen after graduation - and because Norton and Gordon have the expertise to work with animals under the most rigorous conditions - the aspiring dog star was in peak form.

Our fingers are crossed that Family Man will be picked up and Dyson will get his big break. But no matter what happens, we know you can't keep a good dog down - especially a Hollywood Paws dog.
