TV Producer Sends 'Threat Letter' to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and Forwards Copies to Al Sharpton and Dr. Martin Luther King III

Fort Myers, FL (PRWEB) November 12, 2007 -- A black political activist / TV producer in Southwest Florida recently utilized simple technology to send a warning message about racism directly to two powerful democrats and two black civil rights leaders. Steven Jennings collected and shared his thoughts and concerns in a controversial letter specifically designed to capture the attention of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. In a recent interview Jennings said, "America is the land of opportunity for every man, but the black man is loosing ground quickly." He continued, "I don't have a criminal record but I'm sure it's even tougher for a black man with a record. The system disenfranchises us by limiting the jobs and the hope of the black man, forcing his hand to crime, then catching him with his hand in the cookie jar. Next comes the felony and they take away his right to vote. Do the math, this is how they are using drug related felonies and other crimes of survival to disenfranchise black people." He continued, "Racism is alive and well, but these days it's more of a mind game. Racist people don't call you the N-word to your face, they do even worse, they smile while treating you like one." The Threat Letter, as Jennings named it, is also a public challenge to see if either Obama or Clinton would be interested in coming to Southwest Florida and speaking about the negative effects of racism in America.

While waiting on a response, Jennings took matters into his own hands and created a friendly competition on The Cipher Show (http://www.theciphershow.com) entitled, Cool Intelligent People Helping Eradicate Racism or C.I.P.H.E.R. which is a contest that encourages people to send in video taped submissions of them doing something kind or helpful for a randomly selected person from another race. Jennings said, "I want to stimulate positive interactions between races, this could have an enormous ripple effect similar to paying it forward."

The letter Jennings mailed out to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton covered various topics regarding racism in Southwest Florida, where Jennings claimed institutionalized racism still flourished. Jennings described relations between Blacks, Latinos and Whites in Southwest Florida. He proposed the use of empirical research to implement educational programs in various regions of the United States in an effort to eradicate racism.

Jennings stated, "I have done temporary work for the Collier County Elections office and I have met law enforcement officials in both Fort Myers and Naples and the people I met were good people. I also know of many other good Black, White and Latino people in Southwest Florida. But in the same breath I can honestly say I have felt hatred from White and Latino people because of my mere presence in a public place." In reference to Black and Latino unity Jennings said, "Together Blacks and Latinos create beautiful harmony. But if we do not work together as a team to eradicate racism in America, the results will be devastating to us all."

Jennings's forwarded a revised letter to Al Sharpton's personal e-mail, The National Action Network, Martin Luther King III and The Associated Press in hopes of capturing their attention in these matters. Jennings claims that racism in SW Florida is even more serious and complex than just workplace racism, and it is often hidden by the local media. In his revised letter to Sharpton and King, he included additional information about a Black man, Muszack Nazaire, 24, who died while being pursued by Police in Southwest Florida. According to the Naples Daily News, Nazaire was driving on a suspended license, fled law enforcement authorities and was confronted by deputies. After a brief pursuit Nazaire drove through the backyard of a residence and into a canal where he became drenched with water. It was then that deputies used a taser on him, an action that could possibly have killed him by electrocution. The results of his autopsy have been withheld from the public for over six months.

Jennings said, "I can't understand why Al Sharpton would be interested in racist comments made by Dog The Bounty Hunter and would go so far as to issue an open letter on his own website inviting this man to meet him, and then at the same time disregard my serious letter, that I sent to all of his listed e-mail contacts and regional representatives. It seems like civil rights activism in the new millennium is more about high profile cases and celebrities than addressing situations being dealt with by common folks. Mr. Sharpton with all due respect sir, people are dying over here, and there is oppression in this place. Visit the Dunbar community in Fort Myers Florida, Riverpark in Naples, Immokalee Florida, and see the pain in our people's eyes."
