Rockville, MD (PRWEB) October 5, 2007 -- CME Outfitters, LLC, an independent accredited provider of multidisciplinary medical education programming and related healthcare communications services, is pleased to announce an upcoming live and interactive evidence-based neuroscienceCME TV activity titled "Atypicals in Practice: Case Studies on Switching."

This CE activity will also be available as an archived webcast, podcast, and telephone audioconference shortly after the broadcast premiere, and available as a videotape and multimedia CD-ROM in December 2007.

Statement of Need:

Most clinicians initiate antipsychotic therapy for their patients from a perspective that integrates scientific evidence with experience. But many times, a lack of treatment response or treatment emergent side effects warrant a switch to a different agent. In the CATIE trial, 74% of the 1432 patients discontinued their medication within 18 month of initiation. Side effects such as EPS, sedation, galactorrhea, amenorrhea, weight gain, and dyslipidemia may not only affect quality of life, but may also put the patient at increased risk for medical disorders including cardiovascular disease. The process of switching is difficult and carries with it an element of risk. Switching requires planning, appropriate dosing that considers receptor binding, and the active involvement of the patient and caregivers. In this evidence-based neuroscienceCME TV activity, the experts will use a case-based format to explore the complexities of switching patients to a new antipsychotic when side effects and symptom control impact quality of life and patient outcomes.
