ViaSat MD-1366 DISA Certified EBEM SATCOM Modem Establishes New High Throughput Exceeding 200 Mbps On XTAR Satellite

CHARLESTON, SC (BusinessWire EON) July 27, 2007 -- Working with L-3 NSN and XTAR, ViaSat presented off-the-shelf capabilities that can solve the U.S. Navy need for improved throughput to surface ships. The newly DISA-certified U.S. Army and U.S. Navy standard EBEM demonstrated individual terminal throughput rates ranging from 50 Mbps to 155.52 Mbps. The demonstration also showed the value of the advanced QPSK, 8-PSK, and 16-APSK modulations and Turbo codes (MIL-STD-188-165B pending) that enable the EBEM (operating at 16-APSK R=7/8) to achieve 205 Mbps total capacity on a single XTAR transponder, the highest capacity ever achieved on a 72 MHz X-band transponder.

Two innovative functions are important keys to the new level of performance achieved by the ViaSat EBEM.

Information Throughput Adaptation (ITA) increases available throughput by converting power margin, typically reserved for overcoming adverse weather conditions, directly to increasing data rates in normal conditions to achieve vastly higher throughputs than available in MIL-STD-165A and other COTS modems. ITA provides automatic, seamless adjustments in modulation and coding to maximize performance even during adverse weather conditions. The system data rate rises as downlink power increases, and automatically falls back as downlink power decreases. During the demonstration, the EBEM showed its seamless, error-free adaptation to data rates from 28 to over 155 Mbps without operator intervention. This powerful feature will be especially useful for the Navy when the new Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellites come on-line.

Automatic error-free antenna handover (AH) is critical to U.S. Navy shipboard applications for maintaining communication synchronization with the satellite during maneuvers as the ship terminal switches antennas to maintain a constant view of the satellite.

The ViaSat MD-1366 EBEM modem is the new FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access) standard and next state-of-the-art modem to support the communications, command, and control requirements of today's highly mobile, joint U.S. forces using military and commercial satellites at C-, X-, Ku- and Ka-band frequencies. In addition, the MIL-STD-188-165 Working Group plans to incorporate the advanced features and capabilities of the MD-1366 EBEM into MIL-STD-188-165B that will supersede MIL-STD-188-165A.

The demonstration included the L-3 Communications NSN GMT System and 3.9 Meter transit-case antenna. Housed in a weatherproof transit case, the 3.9 meter Lightweight Medium Aperture Antenna (LMAA) is designed for repeated worldwide tactical deployment.
