Rockville, MD (PRWEB) June 27, 2007 -- CME Outfitters, LLC, an independent accredited provider of multidisciplinary medical education programming and related healthcare communications services, is pleased to announce an upcoming live and interactive evidence-based neuroscienceCME TV activity titled "Unmasking the Fallout of Antipsychotic-Induced Weight Gain."

Offered as a simultaneous satellite broadcast, webcast, and telephone audioconference, neuroscienceCME TV is a one-hour, live and interactive continuing education (CE) activity where leading experts discuss clinically relevant, evidence-based issues facing mental health practitioners. Each broadcast's interactivity is enhanced by offering a Q&A segment during which the faculty presenters can respond to audience comments and questions posed via e-mail, fax, or phone. CME Outfitters has also developed a web-based instant polling feature that allows live webcast participants a chance to provide real-time input. CE credit is offered to participants upon completion of each activity.

Premiering Wednesday, August 1, 2007, from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. ET, the activity will examine the impact of antipsychotic-induced weight gain and diabetes mellitus on cognition, cardiovascular disease, and adherence in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The recorded satellite broadcast will re-air from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. ET. This CE activity will also be available as an archived webcast, podcast, and telephone audioconference shortly after the live broadcast, and available as a multimedia CD-ROM in September 2007.

There is no fee to participate or receive CE credit for this activity; however, registration is required. Three forms of registration are accepted:

Statement of Need:

Weight gain is an important contributing factor to metabolic syndrome, as it is a key component in the development of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease--two diseases that carry significant medical morbidity and mortality. In patients with psychiatric disorders, mortality linked to metabolic syndrome is compounded by behaviors such as heavy smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and poor eating habits. Weight gain can affect medication adherence and data continue to emerge on the link between diabetes and cognitive dysfunction, all of which can negatively impact patient outcomes. Treatment with antipsychotic agents may also play a role in weight gain, although available evidence suggests that its incidence and magnitude is quite variable among second-generation antipsychotics. This problem highlights several important needs: careful screening to recognize factors that may contribute to metabolic syndrome, appropriate selection of an antipsychotic agent, systematic monitoring, and effective management. In this neuroscienceCME TV activity, the experts will examine the impact of antipsychotic-induced weight gain and diabetes mellitus in the patient with severe mental illness, with a practical emphasis on evidence-based treatment strategies.
